Indianapolis is a big city with a small-town feel. Our city boasts all of the amenities of a major metropolis: major sports teams, a thriving downtown scene, orchestras, theaters, and many museums--including the world’s largest children’s museum! In addition, Indianapolis hosts numerous universities such as IUPUI, University of Indianapolis, and Marion University. Traffic is light, there’s plenty of room to roam, and the people are classic Midwest-friendly.
The Indy Jewish community is right at the heart of it all, with no more than a 30-minute drive to any part of the city. We have a large eruv with options for affordable housing, including apartments and condominiums adjacent to the shul, and beautiful 3BR-6BR houses ranging from $300,000-$500,000. In addition, we have some of the lowest property taxes in the country.
The jewel of our kehilla is our community school, Hasten Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis (https://www.hhai.org), which is a top-ranked school in the state serving students 12 months through 8th grade. Our Jewish Community Center (https://jccindy.org) hosts sports facilities, camps, after-school programs, a water park, and kosher take-out. The state of Indiana supports major school vouchers and significantly reduces tuition.
Indianapolis has a booming job market in many sectors and is the headquarters of national companies such as Eli Lilly and Co., Anthem, Angie's List, RCI, Simon Property Group, Dow AgroSciences, Finish Line, and the NCAA.
Our eruv has two Orthodox shuls, one Ashkenazi and one Sephardi, which sit just a five-minute walk from each other on the same street. The Ashkenazi shul, B’nai Torah, hosts the community’s mikvaot. Both shuls host frequent events that are attended by the entire kehilla.
Indianapolis has a wide selection of kosher meat and chicken at Costco, as well as Trader Joe’s and Kroger. Additionally, our city receives bulk deliveries of kosher food through the KC Kosher Co-op multiple times each year, arranged through B’nai Torah.
For those looking to travel, Indianapolis is perfectly situated in the Midwest, with just a 2-hour drive to the community of Cincinnati, a 3-hour drive to Columbus, a 2-hour drive to South Bend, a 3-hour drive to Chicago, and a 1-hour drive to the Chasideshe Kehilah in Centerville. Our community is warm, welcoming, and well-situated for building careers and raising families.
