Looking to live in a warm Jewish community with a low-key Midwest attitude and an affordable price tag? Move to Indianapolis!
Indianapolis is well-situated for building careers and raising families. Houses are affordable ($115K for a 2-bedroom condo; $300-400K for a 3-4 bedroom house with a backyard) for a growing family within walking distance of the two shuls. Think lots of grass and trees and quiet, wide roads. Bonus: there’s a 1% state property tax cap.
Indiana’s motto is “A State That Works” and it shows. Find a job in manufacturing, healthcare (two large hospital systems), sports, finance, construction, education, and tech at top companies. Oh, and there's 3% state income tax. With little traffic and most offices within a 30 minute drive, you can expect a short commute.
We have a day care and community day school that provides a high performance, low stress education built on Orthodox Jewish principles. Thanks to school choice, you can receive a state voucher for private school education. Indiana also supports homeschooling with minimal restrictions. Collegebound? There are several top notch universities and medical schools within an hour drive of the Jewish community.
There are several centers of Jewish life: Congregation B'nai Torah (Orthodox Ashkenaz) and Etz Chaim (Sephardic), Indy Kollel, JCC of Indianapolis, Indianapolis Jewish Discovery Center, and the Chabad of Indiana. These institutions and organizations host services and/or events throughout the year.
Every local chain has an extensive selection of kosher food and local organizations arrange bulk deliveries several times a year. Need catering? We have that too!
Indianapolis is a family friendly city with libraries, the largest children’s museum in the world, a zoo, museums, parks, and playgrounds. You can catch an Off-Broadway show, listen to live music, or attend sporting events.
With distinct seasons, you can expect lots of rain to cut through the humidity in the spring and summer, a crisp autumn, and cold, but not bone-chilling, winter.
Traveling out of state is a breeze. Take a 30 minute drive to a highly ranked airport. We’re a Southwest hub too. Expect about a 2-3 hour drive to Cincinnati, Columbus, and Chicago.
If you’re looking to be a member, not a just number, Indianapolis is the place for you. There are many ways to contribute to the community.
